New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday attacked the Opposition, particularly the Congress, accusing it of making "U-turns" regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and seeking its apology for the latter's allegations against the nation's electoral process.
At a press conference, BJP National Media Co-convenor Sidharth Yadav recalled that before the West Bengal Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi had accused former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that had she not paved the way, the BJP would not have entered Bengal.
"However, immediately after the elections concluded, Rahul Gandhi took a U-turn, attributing the BJP's victory to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the electoral process itself. We are witnessing a persistent campaign of false propaganda and narratives—particularly by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi —about the country's electoral process. The attempt to erode citizens' faith in the democratic process and weaken the backbone of democracy is evident to all," he said.
"This effort has been ongoing for a long time and is being executed systematically. The Congress party's drastic U-turns regarding elections serve as clear evidence of its political flip-flops and its practice of 'politics of convenience'," he remarked.
Citing examples from specific states, Sidharth Yadav noted that Congress leaders had previously advocated purifying voter lists and are now questioning the ECI.
He pointed out that on August 15, 2018, the Congress alleged that 42 lakh duplicate names were in the Rajasthan voter list and demanded their removal. "The SIR process resulted in the deletion of approximately the same number of names—41.85 lakh."
"When the SIR was conducted in Kerala, and the Congress party emerged victorious, they praised the exercise, calling it helpful and an excellent initiative. The Congress had then claimed that the Communist Party had inserted bogus names into the voter list, causing the irregularities, " Yadav said.
The BJP leader further recalled that in 2018, the Congress maintained that failing to remove duplicate names amounted to a betrayal of democracy. "Now, we are witnessing the Congress's reaction as names are being removed. Several videos have surfaced in which illegal immigrants have admitted to voting in elections before the SIR process," he stated.
Pointing out that on August 24, 2013, 13.58 lakh votes were deleted in Delhi, Siddharth Yadav said: "Although we were in the opposition at the time, we never claimed that the action was wrong, that it constituted vote theft, or that there was any flaw in the process."
Referring to the SIR process in Bihar and Maharashtra, he said: "On August 9, 2013, 76 lakh voters were found to be suspicious. No one from the opposition claimed that these voters were problematic, that there were flaws in the process, or that anything was amiss. On April 27, 2014, 70.76 lakh voters were removed, and 74 lakh voters were added in Maharashtra without an SIR. No one alleged that votes were being stolen."
Claiming that SIRs were conducted ten times during the tenures of Congress governments, Yadav said: "At that time, no one questioned the process."
"Now is the time for opposition leaders and the country's opposition to understand their responsibilities. Questioning the nation's democracy, undermining the democratic process, casting doubt on constitutional institutions, eroding public trust in these institutions, and accusing or maligning them to mask one's own failures at the grassroots level—this is not the opposition's role. It is an injustice to the country. The Congress party should apologise for this," he asserted.
